Prison Labor and Rehabilitation

Systematic literature review of international quantitative and qualitative studies

Project duration: 20.09.2024 -

Description

The aim of the project is to provide an overview of the empirical findings on the following question:

To what extent and under what circumstances do prison work and work-related prison programmes in Germany have a rehabilitating effect?

As initial literature search in preparation for the project revealed few studies from Germany, the following secondary research question will also be answered:

What can international literature contribute to answering this question and what is the situation in other countries?

The literature review will offer a comprehensive overview of the research conducted on this topic to date, highlighting the key findings and insights that emerge from these studies. It will include both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data mainly focuses on the effects of prison labour on recidivism and employment after release. Qualitative research can additionally show the views of prisoners and prison practitioners and provide insights into the circumstances under which prison work can have a rehabilitating effect.
