Recognising and preventing Islamist radicalisation (IRev) – Prevention in the Prison System

Project date range: 01.01.2018 – 31.12.2020

Description

Law enforcement in Germany is currently facing the challenge of having to deal with people categorised as radical Islamists who are returning from "Islamic State" territories or otherwise convicted for committing Islamist-motivated offences. Furthermore, the question of whether and how specific prison conditions contribute to radicalisation is frequently discussed. In this light, a variety of initiatives dedicated to prevention of Islamist radicalisation have evolved in the German federal states. Although substantiated theoretically, only a few of the initiatives have been sufficiently scientifically evaluated. By introducing the project "IRev – recognising and preventing Islamist radicalisation" the KrimZ attempts to contribute to a better understanding of the effects of preventative measures against Islamist radicalisation and violence. The aim of the project is to analyse the impact of specific measures on individuals and to bed these results into a generalised context. The cooperation with two German correctional facilities is planned. The Project "IRev – recognising and preventing Islamist radicalisation" builds on the previous KrimZ pilot project "Extremism and the prison System".
