In the KrimZ survey series on the execution of life sentences, which has been running for 20 years, the 2021 reporting year continues the sequence of years in which a comparatively large number of stays in prison were terminated and prisoners were released on parole due to a subsequent suspension of execution. Those released are often persons who left the penal system at a correspondingly older age after serving particularly long sentences.

Of the 95 persons whose life sentences ended in 2021, 52 were released on parole after suspension of the remainder of their sentence pursuant to Section 57a of the Criminal Code. Half of these released prisoners had spent more than 18.1 years in the execution of life sentences. 29 prisoners were extradited, deported or transferred abroad to serve their sentences. 14 persons died while serving their sentences.
