Organization and Activities
KrimZ is organized as a registered association. Its regular members are the Federal Republic of Germany and the federal states. In practice, the members are represented by their respective ministers of justice or senators of justice, who in turn are represented by the departments of criminal law and/or corrections, which also deal with criminological issues.

The most important governing body of KrimZ is the General Assembly. Its main responsibilities include electing the Executive Board, appointing advisory board members, approving contracts with full-time research staff, approving the budget, and authorizing the implementation of research projects. In contrast, the Executive Board is responsible for determining the specific details of the tasks outlined in the bylaws.
KrimZ receives advice and support in the area of research from its advisory board. The advisory board is composed of representatives from the criminal justice system, police agencies, and the German Research Foundation (DFG), as well as university professors from various disciplines relevant to criminological research.

In addition to the Advisory Board, there are a number of corresponding members with whom information is exchanged. These include research institutions abroad and former members of the KrimZ Advisory Board.
The management and representation of the association are the responsibility of the full-time executive board, which consists of the director and the deputy director.
The academic staff includes criminologists, legal scholars, sociologists, and psychologists specializing in criminological research, who are supported in their work by a number of student and research assistants. They are funded both from the center’s own budget and through third-party grants. Other staff members include administrative personnel, the library staff, and the KrimZ secretariat.
KrimZ is a registered nonprofit association (e. V.). Its regular members are the Federal Republic of Germany and the federal states, represented by the Federal Ministry of Justice and the state justice administrations.
